A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous. We have got to change our ethics and our financial system and our whole way of understanding the world. It has to be a world in which people live rather than die; a sustainable world. It could be great. I like the things around me to be beautiful and slightly dreamy, with a feeling of worldliness. It's really easy to get colors right. It's really hard to get black - and neutrals - right. Black is certainly a color but it's also an illusion. Beauty is perfect in its imperfections, so you just have to go with the imperfections.
Sometimes incompetence is useful. It helps you keep an open mind. Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it. I feel that things happen for a reason and open up new opportunities. Beauty is perfect in its imperfections, so you just have to go with the imperfections. Money is the most corrosive aspect of life today because it means that all attention to detail is forgotten.
Go to a place where you're not going to be stressed, because a honeymoon itself can be a stressful thing. Design is a series of creative choices - it's a collaborative effort, an evolutionary process. You choose your fabrics depending upon what you want to say, then you work with mills to get those fabrics. Through the process, you realize what you want it to be. Attention to detail is of utmost importance when you want to look good. My shows are about the complete woman who swallows it all. It's a question of survival. First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman. Then I made a sweater because I wanted to have one that wasn't like anyone else's.
A woman is never sexier than when she is comfortable in her clothes. We must never confuse elegance with snobbery. In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different. You can hide so much behind theatrics, and I don't need to do that any more. A woman has the age she deserves.
You're only as good as your last collection, which is an enormous pressure. I believe that my clothes can give people a better image of themselves - that it can increase their feelings of confidence and happiness. All I did my first year at Vogue was Xerox. I think there is something about luxury - it's not something people need, but it's what they want. It really pulls at their heart. I love to design things that people can actually buy. I'm staggered by what a boot costs today.
I do not have one theme for each season, I just try to make beautiful clothes all year round. I don't like trends. They tend to make everybody look the same. I get ideas about what's essential when packing my suitcase. There has to be a balance between your mental satisfaction and the financial needs of your company. I can design a collection in a day and I always do, cause I've always got a load of Italians on my back, moaning that it's late.
